Muscular Atrophy
Aquatic therapy has been shown to be very beneficial for people with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and other types of Muscular Atrophies. In the warm water, your body feels lighter and easier to move due to the buoyant properties of water. This helps keep and improve mobility, strength, and range of motion. Being in warm water relieves pressure on the joints, makes it easier to perform exercise and therapy, and reduces pain and discomfort. The healing properties of warm water provide weight relief, postural support, an increased range of motion, a greater range of flexibility, and provide an opportunity to perform activities that may be too difficult or painful to accomplish on land. Aquatic exercises provide low-intensity strength training, balance and coordination exercises, and aerobic training without the fear of pain, injury, fatigue, or overwork. In addition, aquatic therapy and exercise helps those with muscular conditions to be able to improve and keep up their cardiovascular and respiratory health and fitness!
