Heart
Cardiac Health and Aquatic Exercise
Aquatic exercise helps with cardiac health by allowing your heart to increase the speed at which it pumps, and the strength at which it pumps. This creates a stronger heart, lower heart rate, and a lower blood pressure.
The warm therapy pools allow blood circulation to flow more freely by dilating the blood vessels. This allows for more of your blood to circulate through your body, providing much needed nutrients to your muscles and other parts of the body.
Benefits of cardiac aquatic therapy:
-
Increased functional capacity: This is the maximum ability of the body to activate its energy systems to cope with the demands of exercise.
-
Improved cardiac efficiency: increased tolerance for and practice of ADL, reduced heart rate, blood pressure, and rate of perceived exertion when exercising at submaximum levels.
-
Increase in Myocardial Perfusion: improved blood supply to the heart muscle.
-
Reduced CVD risk factors: reduced total cholesterol, reduced triglycerides, reduced resting blood pressure, improved control of Type 2 Diabetes, and better control of body fat.
-
Reduced symptoms of CAD: reduced Angina threshold, and reduced pain.
-
Improved psychosocial well being: reduced anxiety, muscular tension, reduced depression, increased self confidence, greater ability to cope with stress.
