Gout
Gout is a disease that results from an overload of uric acid in the body. This overload of uric acid leads to the formation of tiny crystals of urate that deposit in tissues of the body, especially the joints. When crystals form in the joints, it causes recurring attacks of joint inflammation (arthritis).
Because gout is thought to be a metabolic disease diet and exercise are really important. Changing your diet will reduce the amount of sugar you put into your body and will decrease the amount of insulin being produced. Insulin inhibits uric acid from being filtered out by the kidneys. Therefore, diet changes will prevent large amounts of insulin from being prduced.
Exercise is important, too. As you exercise, your cells become more insulin sensitive, so your body will absorb the insulin to make energy (also reducing insulin levels). One of the best ways to avoid pain while exercising is to use aquatic therapy. Aquatic therapy can help with pain and inflammation by increasing circulation, which carries fluid back to the heart and lymphatic system (reducing swelling). Most of the pain you feel in your joints will be taken away by the hydrostatic pressure and buoyancy of the water. The water's buoyant force counteracts gravity and makes you feel weightless. Therefore, exercising will be much easier to do. By exercising, you are able to keep your joints moving, which helps to prevent the build up of uric acid on your joints. Compared to someone who does not use aquatic therapy, you will be able to move your joints better and with less pain.
